The musical “Cats” directed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, was based on the collection of children’s poems, written by Thomas Stearns Eliot called “Old Possum’s book of practical Cats”.
Andrew Lloyd Webber is a British composer. He was born on the 22nd of March, 1948 in Kensington, London. Lloyd Webber wrote a lot of musicals, for example, “Cats”, “Starlight Express”, “The Phantom of the opera” and others. The first night of the musical “Cats” took place in London, on the 11th of May, 1981. In 1998 the screen version of the musical was made. I have seen it and want to share my impressions.
Throughout the musical actors sang and danced. Decorations, music and costumes were splendid!!! The plot began with the fact that cats said what names they had. The cats belonged to the Jellicle Cats’ tribe. And they went to the Ball. Among them there were the fluffy cat Gumbie, some tiger cats, Rum Tum Tugger – contrary cat, thieves and swindlers Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer, the magical cat Mr. Mistoffelees, the mystery cat Macavity, the theatre cat Gus, tha fat cat Bustopher Jones, the railway cat Skimbleshanks and the main cat – old Deuteronomy. And there was another cat, her name was Grizabella, poor, dirty and walked with a limp. She was ignored by other cats. Deuteronomy chose the cat who would go to Jellicle Heaven and it was Grizabella at the end. Cats saw her off singing a song that cats were not dogs’ relatives.
I believe that David Mallet has directed an excellent screen version of the popular musical. The actors sang so beautiful! Most of all I liked is the dancing. The actors managed to represent cat’s grace. They were very similar to cats. Costume designers created fantastic costumes!
Thanks to “Cats” a musical became one of my favourite genres.
